Fellowship description

The aim of the TWAS-SN Bose Fellowship Programme is to enable and encourage academically able students from developing countries with the world’s largest South-South PhD and post-doctoral research fellowship programme. TWAS helps early-career researchers to gain education and experience at top global science institutions

Eligibility

Candidates for these fellowships must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a maximum age of 35 years on 31 December of the application year
  • Be nationals of a developing country (other than India)
  • Must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in India or any developed country
  • Hold a Master’s degree in physics, mathematics or physical chemistry
  • Be accepted by a department of the S.N. Bose National Centre. Requests for acceptance must be directed to the Dean (Academic Programme), S.N. Bose National Centre for Sciences by e-mail) applicantsmust accompany their request for an Acceptance Letter with copy of their CV, a research proposal outline and two reference letters
  • Provide evidence of proficiency in English, if the medium of education was not English
  • Provide evidence that s/he will return to her/his home country on completion of the fellowship

Value

S.N. Bose will provide;

  • A monthly stipend to cover living costs and food. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency
  • Free on-campus accommodation will be provided
  • The monthly stipend does not cover comprehensive health insurance.  The Centre does, however, deduct a small contribution towards a Contributory Medical Scheme. The benefits are partial reimbursement of Doctor’s fees, medicines and/or hospitalisation costs if any, and only for costs incurred in Kolkata. The reimbursement structure is along the lines of the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) of the Government of India

  • Applications for the TWAS-S.N. Bose Postgraduate Fellowship Programme should be sent to TWAS only (by email)
  • Applicants must submit an Acceptance Letter from a department of the S.N. Bose National Centre when applying, or by the deadline at the latest. Without preliminary acceptance, the application will not be considered for selection

The sponsorship program for foreign students (Ausländerförderung) is aimed at international students and graduates who have acquired a university degree in their home country and who intend to complete postgraduate or master studies, doctoral studies or a research stay at a university in Germany

Eligibility

The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for this scholarship:
Applicants should

  • Be able to provide evidence of above average academic performance
  • Bring broad general education and distinct interest in political issues
  • Have a positive attitude towards democracy and human rights
  • Have been actively engaged in voluntary work for the benefit of the people and the society in their home countries
  • Be open to developing their personal points of view and practice tolerance towards those with different beliefs
  • Be highly motivated and be able to convince us with their own plans and potential

 

Our scholarships consist not only of financial assistance but also include a program of ideational support. We expect our scholars to participate actively in this program throughout the eligibility period, including

  • The participation in at least four multi-day seminars of our annual agenda
  • Regular attendance and active participation in the meetings of the regional scholar group at their university. The activities of these regional scholar groups offer a unique opportunity to enter into an interdisciplinary, political and personal exchange with other scholars, alumni and representatives of our foundation at the universities, the so-called “Vertrauensdozenten”.

Value

This Scholarship offers the following:

  • Duration and level of funding vary for different types of studies. Graduates (master or postgraduate students) receive a monthly scholarship of € 750. The standard funding period is two years
  • After having obtained unconditional admission to doctoral studies at a German university, PhD-students receive a monthly scholarship of € 920. The standard funding period for Ph.D. scholars is three years
  • We also fund research stays in Germany with duration of at least 6 months by the same amount (€ 920) under the condition that the applicant holds a university degree comparable to the German Master’s degree and provides evidence of at least two years of work experience in the academic field
  • Besides the monthly scholarship payments, they offer multiple subsidies for our scholars. On request, we subsidise health care insurance of up to the amount of € 120 per month
  • Also, we pay a family supplement provided that you and your spouse live together in one place in Germany for at least three months and that his/her income does not exceed the amount of € 450 per month. We grant a supplement of € 184 per month for children living with you in Germany. Prerequisites are the submission of an official German translation of the child’s birth certificate and the official rejection of your demand for public child allowance
  • PhD-scholars can apply for financial assistance for foreign research stays although we do not fund participation in congresses or symposia
  • Fees resulting from courses at the university in Germany that are directly related to your studies can be refunded up to the amount of € 500 per semester. In contrast, we do not refund regular semester fees resulting from matriculation or annual re-registration
  • Note: after finishing their studies in Germany, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung expects its former scholars to contribute actively to the development of their home country’s relations with the Federal Republic of Germany

Important information regarding the formal application requirements:

  • The minimum period in our scholarship program is one year and the remaining length of applicants studies or research in Germany has to be at least two semesters. They do not provide support for bachelor studies. Only students in master, postgraduate or doctoral studies are eligible for our scholarship program
  • Students in Medicine or Pharmacy can only apply after having completed their intermediate exam in Germany or when having achieved a comparable stage of their studies in another country. Human or dental medicine specialist training or postgraduate research stays in Germany cannot be supported
  • Persons having already achieved a doctorate are not eligible for a scholarship
  • There is an age limit of 30 years for all applicants
  • Our program of ideational support and the activities of the regional scholar groups are held in German. For this reason, a sufficient knowledge of the German language (level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is obligatory for all scholars even if the courses of their planned studies are taught in English. In general, our scholars take and pass the DSH exam (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang – German Exam for College Admission) or the DaF-test (Deutsch als Fremdsprache – Test of German as a foreign language) with a high rating before the beginning of their university studies in Germany. In exceptional cases and for highly qualified applicants only, we financially support German language courses as preparation for studies in Germany
  • International applicants are eligible to apply for these scholarships

  • An informal letter of recommendation concerning the applicant’s personality: This opinion should focus on your personality and interests as well as on your understanding of values and your social commitment. The author cannot be the same as that providing the academic letter of recommendation
  • Certificate of admission or matriculation from your university in Germany
  • Two passport photographs: If applying for a doctoral scholarship, please attach additionally
  • A detailed description of your doctoral thesis: This exposé, written in German or English (4-5 pages), should outline the central research question of your proposed project, its scientific relevance, your theoretical approach and the motives behind your choice of the research subject. It should also contain a work and time schedule and a bibliography
  • A second academic letter of recommendation: This second opinion should be written by the supervisor of your doctoral thesis, providing you already have one. It replaces the letter of recommendation concerning the applicant’s personality

For the second time, the Hochschulwerk of Witten/Herdecke University, in cooperation with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), offers a scholarship for international Witten/Herdecke students from lower income countries

Scholarship description

This funding forms a program of non-repayable support to help to ensure that a Witten degree is accessible to all academically talented international students regardless of family income. As tuition fees can be paid after the completion of the studies in dependence on the personal income (inverse contract between student generations), this award is intended to help with living expenses only

Eligibility

Eligible are Witten/Herdecke international students who meet the following criteria:

  • Nationality of a lower income country (annual GDP/capita less than 10.000,00 $)
  • Registration certificate or successful application for a degree program at Witten/Herdecke University. You have to have a confirmation letter from the University Witten/Herdecke, affirming that you will definitely study at the university
  • Personal need of funding (to be confirmed by the Social Committee)

Value

The scholarship comprises a monthly grant of €700,- for 12 months with the option of extension for another 12 months.  It is not intended for PhD students.  It is not possible to study correspondence courses at the UWH.

Applications are invited for the 2016  (OWSD) Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women from Developing Countries; Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDC)

Fellowship description

These fellowships are awarded to pursue postgraduate studies leading to doctorate degree in all branches of the natural sciences at a centre of excellence (renowned research institutions/universities) in the South (developing countries) outside applicant’s home country

The general purpose of the scheme is to contribute to the emergence of a new generation of women leaders in science and technology, and to promote their effective participation in the scientific and technological development of their countries

The specific aims of the scheme are to improve access to educational and training opportunities in science and technology for young and talented women graduates from Sub-Saharan Africa and LDCs, to increase the scientific productivity and creativity of women scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa and LDCs and to empower a new generation of talented women to assume a leadership role in science and technology and their application to sustainable development.

Eligibility

  • These fellowships are open to qualified women science graduates from countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (see list below)
  • If applicants are over 40 years of age, they should include a brief explanation of why their research career has been delayed
  • The minimum qualification is an MSc degree (or equivalent), or an outstanding BSc honours degree in the natural sciences, engineering or information technology disciplines
  • Host institutions must be located in a developing country. This must be a different country from the applicant’s home country
  • Applicants must provide a preliminary acceptance letter from at least one host institute. The letter must be prepared based on the sample on page 10 and be signed by the head of department, potential host supervisor or postgraduate studies coordinator
  • Students from eligible countries already enrolled on a PhD programme in their home country can apply for the sandwich option. This gives them access to expertise and resources that might not be available at the home institute
  • Applicants already on site in the host country will not be considered eligible since this implies that they have already secured sufficient funding for their studies
  • The applicant must be willing to return to her own country after completion of the fellowship
  • Accompanying persons are not eligible for support

Each fellowship will be offered for up to three years and will cover the following:

  • Travel expenses to and from the host institute
  • A monthly allowance to cover accommodation and meals while in the host country, the amount of which will be determined in consultation with the host institution
  • Refund of visa costs
  • A contribution for medical insurance
  • Attending one international conference/training course during the period of the fellowship
  • On a competitive basis, attending of scientific communication and proposal writing workshop
  • An applicant who has already registered or who wishes to register as a PhD student at her home institute can choose a sandwich option, whereby part of the research programme is undertaken at a host institute in another developing country. In this case the fellowship provides support (travel, accommodation and living expenses) only while at the host institution. The minimum period abroad is six months. The fellowship does not provide support while the applicant is at the home institute. Alternatively, an applicant can enroll as a full-time research student at an institution outside her country, in this case the fellowship will provide support (travel, accommodation and living expenses) for 3 years
  • The host institution will be expected to provide the necessary facilities such as tuition, training, supervision, laboratory supplies etc
  • Accompanying persons are not eligible for support

Applicants should complete all parts of the attached application form and enclose the mandatory preliminary acceptance letter from a host institute, and copies of all university degree certificates and university-issued transcripts, which should include grades and courses taken

  • If the applicant is registered for a doctorate degree at an institution in her home country and wishes to pursue part of her research at another institution under a “sandwich programme”, a letter of recommendation from the home institute supervisor must be enclosed
  • Applicants must also submit a research outline for their proposed PhD programme. In the case of sandwich option applicants, the outline must make it clear which parts of the work will be carried out at the host institute
  • Two SIGNED reference letters from senior scientists familiar with the applicant’s studies must be provided. Reference letters must be on letter-headed paper, signed and sent as attachments via email by the applicant directly with the rest of the application or by the referee. In this case, the subject line of the email must contain: OWSD/PG/candidate’s surname. Only signed reference letters can be accepted
  • For sandwich applicants: the two referees must be different from the PhD home supervisor
  • Incomplete, illegible or untidy applications will be evaluated poorly, therefore applicants are requested to make sure the application documents are well prepared and to include all the required enclosures (please see checklist on the last page of the application form)
  • Applications must be clearly typewritten in English, and completed in all parts; regrettably the OWSD office cannot process incomplete and/or illegible applications. Applications will only be acknowledged once processed

Scholarship description

Commonwealth Scholarships for Master’s and PhD study in the UK are offered for citizens of developing Commonwealth countries. These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), with the aim of contributing to the UK’s international development aims and wider overseas interests, supporting excellence in UK higher education, and sustaining the principles of the Commonwealth. Students from developing countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK can apply for Commonwealth Shared Scholarships for Master’s study, jointly supported by UK universities

Shared Scholarships are usually tenable for one-year Master’s courses only. Scholarships are awarded to study subjects related to the development of applicant’s home country at participating UK universities only

Eligibility

To apply for a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, candidate must:

  • Be a Commonwealth citizen, refugee, or British protected person
  • Be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country
  • Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2016
  • By August 2016, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard
  • Not have studied or worked for one (academic) year or more in a developed country
  • Be unable, either yourself or through your family, to pay to study in the UK

Shared Scholarships are jointly funded by the CSC and participating UK universities. Each Scholarship provides the following:

  • Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and return at the end of your award (arranged by the university; funded by the CSC)
  • Approved tuition and examination fees (funded by the CSC)
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,034 per month, or £1,268 per month for those studying at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at 2015/2016 levels) (paid and funded by the university)
  • Thesis grant towards the cost of preparing a dissertation, where applicable (claimed from and paid by the university; funded by the CSC)
  • Warm clothing allowance and visa reimbursement, where applicable (paid and funded by the university)
  • Study travel grant towards the costs of study-related travel within the UK or overseas (claimed from and paid by the university; funded by the CSC)
  • Excess baggage allowance, up to an annual approved limit, when returning home (claimed from and paid by the university; funded by the CSC)

How to apply

  • Applicants should apply to study an eligible Master’s course at a UK university that is participating in the Shared Scholarship scheme
  • Applicants must make their application using the CSC’s Electronic Application System (EAS)
  • Applicant can apply for more than one course and/or to more than one university, but they may only accept one offer of a Shared Scholarship
  • The CSC will not accept any applications that are not submitted via the EAS to their UK university or applications directly from individuals

Each participating UK university will conduct its own recruitment process to select a specified number of candidates for Shared Scholarships. Candidates are recruited and selected by UK host universities in the first instance. Selection criteria include: the academic merit of the candidate, as well as the likely impact of their work on the development of their home country

2016 International Climate Protection Fellowships in Germany for Students from Developing Countries

Applications are invited for the 2016 International Climate Protection Fellowships in Germany for Students from Developing Countries. Federal Environment Ministry’s (BMU) International Climate Initiative is inviting applications for this fellowships which is available for young climate experts from developing countries

Fellowship description

The fellowship allows future leaders to spend a year in Germany working on a research-based project of their own choice in the field of climate protection and climate-related resource conservation. It is also for young climate experts from developing countries interested in conducting a project in Germany and developing long-term collaborations.  Fellows are free to choose their own hosts. Submit an application if you come from a non-European transition or developing country and are active in any of the following areas: scientific, engineering-based, legal, economic, health-related or social aspects of climate change. During a three-week introductory phase, you will have the opportunity to make contact with other climate protection fellows and visit companies, research institutions and cultural events in Germany. An intensive German-language course before you begin the fellowship will smooth your way into everyday life in Germany whilst a continuing education event lasting several days in the course of the fellowship will enable you to acquire not only practical knowledge of climate protection but also expertise in management

Subject to final confirmation of funding, 20 fellowships can be granted. The following mandatory timetable is designed to facilitate networking amongst the fellows:

  • January, February 2017: intensive German language course in Bonn (optional)
  • March 2017: introductory seminar at several locations in Germany
  • April 2017 – February 2018: work on research-based projects
  • June 2017: Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Annual Meeting including reception held by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany in Berlin
  • Autumn 2017: several-day study tour
  • January/February 2018: final week including reception held by the leadership of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety
  • Fellowships may be extended by up to three months

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following criteria to qualify for consideration for this fellowship:

  • The first university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) must have been obtained within the past 12 years, counting from the end of the application period
  • Clearly visible leadership potential demonstrated by experience in a leadership position, or appropriate references
  • Work experience (at least 48 months at the time of application) or a successfully completed doctorate in the field of climate protection
  • A detailed statement by a host in Germany, including a mentoring agreement.
