Applications are invited for the 2017 Commonwealth Scholarships in the UK for Students from Developing Commonwealth Countries. These Scholarships are offered by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). Scholarships are available for pursuing Master’s, PhD and split-site (PhD) degree program at UK Universities

Scholarship description

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is one of the largest and most prestigious scholarship schemes for international study in the world. Since it was established in 1959, around 34,000 individuals have benefited – 26,000 of them have held awards funded by the UK government, managed by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom (CSC). The CSC’s Secretariat is provided by the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), which is responsible for all matters concerning selection, academic studies, and evaluation

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree). Scholarships are awarded in all subject areas offered at UK universities, although the CSC’s selection criteria give priority to applications that demonstrate strong relevance to development

Applicants are also expected to be Commonwealth citizens, refugee, or British protected persons, be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country, be available to start their academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2017 and by October 2017, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)

Value

Each scholarship provides the following:

  • Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and return at the end of your award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor usually the cost of journeys made before your award is finally confirmed)
  • Approved tuition and examination fees
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,043 per month, or £1,279 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at 2016-2017 levels)
  • Thesis grant towards the cost of preparing a thesis or dissertation, (where applicable)
  • Warm clothing allowance, (where applicable)
  • Study travel grant towards the costs of study-related travel within the UK or overseas
  • For PhD Scholars, fieldwork grant towards the cost of fieldwork undertaken overseas (usually the cost of one economy class return airfare to your fieldwork location), where approved
  • For PhD Scholars, paid mid-term visit (airfare) to your home country (unless you have claimed (or intend to claim) spouse and/or child allowances during your scholarship, or have received a return airfare to your home country for fieldwork)
  • If your scholarship is at least 18 months long, the following family allowances:  Spouse allowance of £224 per month if you and your spouse are living together at the same address in the UK (unless your spouse is also in receipt of a scholarship; other conditions also apply)
  • Child allowance of £224 per month for the first child, and £110 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if you are accompanied by your spouse and children and they are living with you at the same address in the UK
  • If they are widowed, divorced, or a single parent (irrespective of the length of your scholarship), child allowance of £448 per month for the first child, and £110 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if you are accompanied by your children and they are living with you at the same address in the UK The CSC’s family allowances are intended to be only a contribution towards the cost of maintaining your family in the UK. The true costs are likely to be considerably higher, and you must be able to supplement these allowances in order to support any family members who come to the UK with you

How to apply

Applicants must make their application using the CSC’s Electronic Application System (EAS).

Applicants should apply to study at Master’s/PhD level at a UK university with which the CSC has a part funding agreement. Part funding agreements are at the discretion of individual universities. For a list of universities that have already agreed to part fund Commonwealth Scholarships. Applicants must apply to one of the following nominating bodies in the first instance – the CSC does not accept direct applications for these scholarships:

  • National nominating agencies – this is the main route of application
  • Selected universities/university bodies, which can nominate their own academic staff
  • Selected non-governmental organisations and charitable bodies

All applications must be made through your nominating body in your home country. Each nominating body is responsible for its own selection process. You must check with your nominating body for their specific advice and rules for applying, their own eligibility criteria, and their own closing date for applications. The CSC does not impose any age limit on applicants, but nominating bodies may do so in line with their own priorities.

Applicants must make an application using the CSC’s Electronic Application System (EAS), in addition to any other application form that you are required to complete by your nominating body.

Applicants must provide the following supporting documentation to be received by the CSC by 6 January 2017 in order for your application to be eligible for consideration;

2017/2018 Hosei International Fund (HIF) Foreign Scholars Fellowship in Japan

In 1980, Hosei University in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of its founding, established the Hosei International Fund (HIF) to advance international cooperation in academic research and scholarship. HOSEI University was selected by the Japanese government to receive support under the 2014 Top Global University Project. The following is an overview of their efforts to create a global university with the vision to achieve a sustainable society, as a world-leading country in terms of problem-solving. Research areas include those studies in the humanities, social or natural sciences, or engineering as deemed acceptable by Hosei

Eligibility

Applicant must:

  • Be foreign national (includes stateless person, foreign national currently residing in Japan)
  • Be presently enrolled in a doctoral degree program, hold a doctorate or its equivalent as recognized by the University
  • Have sufficient fluency in either Japanese or English
  • Be no more than 39 years of age as of April 1, 2017
  • Not have been a previous recipient of this fellowship

Value

  • Fellowship Grant: an HIF Fellow can receive ¥300,000 each month
  • Travel Grant and Other Perquisites: an HIF Fellow can receive all or part of economy class transportation expenses for travel to and from Japan. The travel subsidy for round-trip travel is ¥300,000 maximum (or up to ¥150,000 for one-way travel). To receive the inbound travel subsidy, the researcher must be living outside Japan; to receive the outbound subsidy a researcher must leave Japan within 30 days of completion of the research program; an HIF Fellow may receive assistance in his/her research from the research advisor, participate in lectures and seminars, and use other facilities of Hosei University and an HIF Fellow will be provided with shared office space, PC, and a Hosei University network ID
  • Housing:Hosei University will provide, upon request, a furnished apartment. However, the rent (approximately ¥100,000 per month) must be borne by the Fellow. (Note that rental expenses are subject to change)

2017/2018 DAAD Scholarships for Students from Developing Countries

Applications are invited for DAAD scholarships from developing countries’ students. The scholarships are available for pursuing a postgraduate degree at German institutions of Higher education

Scholarship description

The DAAD promotes the training of specialists from development and newly industrialised countries with its development-oriented postgraduate study programmes. The DAAD supports over 100,000 German and international students und researchers around the globe each year – making it the world’s largest funding organisation of its kind

The last academic degree (usually a Bachelor’s degree) should have been completed no longer than six years previously. Scholarships are available to pursue a postgraduate degree at a state or state-recognised German university, and in exceptional cases to take a doctoral degree, and to obtain a university qualification (Master’s/PhD) in Germany

Eligibility

Scholarship criteria are:

  • Graduates must have at least two years’ professional experience
  • Candidates must fulfil the necessary academic requirements and can be expected to successfully complete a study programme in Germany (above-average result for first academic exam – top performance third, language skills)
  • Candidates must have a Bachelor degree (usually a four-year course) in an appropriate subject
  • Candidates must have at least two years’ professional experience
  • Candidates must prove that their motivation is development-related and be expected to take on social responsibility and initiate and support processes of change in their personal and professional environment after their training/scholarship

Over 170 international scholarships are open for one year to M1 or M2-level students. These scholarships are available for prospective students commencing their master’s (nationally-certified degree) programs in the 2016/2017 academic session

Scholarship description

University of Paris-Saclay is developing a strategy of international university cooperation, based on the quality of education provided by its members and research teams, which boast the highest international standards

The University of Paris-Saclay would like to promote access to its master’s (nationally-certified degree) programs to international students, taught in its member establishments, and to make it easier for highly-qualified foreign students to attend its University especially those wishing to develop an academic project through research up to the doctoral level

Scholarships are offered in diverse fields to help students in upgrading their education in all disciplines at the university

Eligibility

  • Newcomer international students, maximum 30 years old at the year of acceptance. Foreign students living in France less than one year, taking language classes are not eligible for a degree (type FLE)
  • Studies cannot be suspended more than two years
  • The scholarship cannot be cumulated with any other type of scholarship whose amount exceeds 600€/month
  • International students can apply for these scholarships

Value

  • The University of Paris-Saclay scholarship is 10,000€ per year. It is paid by the establishment the candidate is registered in for the duration of the academic year, and for a period of no less than 10 consecutive months per year
  • A maximum of 1,000€ for travel and VISA expenses is also awarded depending on the candidate’s country of origin

How to apply

The mode of applying is Online. Application for the scholarship program is as follows:

  • Step 1: Selected students automatically receive by email a link to the online application form they must fill in
  • Step 2: Upon receipt of this email, the student has 8 days to complete and validate the application form and to provide the names of two referents
  • Step 3: The two referents provided by the candidate each receive an email with a link to an online recommendation form. They have 8 days to complete and validate this form online. The candidate is automatically informed when each form has been validated. It is the candidate’s responsibility to make sure each referent has validated the recommendation forms on time
  • Step 4: The file is considered complete when the two recommendation forms have been validated. Important: the candidate will not receive a message stipulating that his file is complete
  • Step 5: The final decision is the responsibility of a panel of experts of University of Paris-Saclay. The candidates admitted into the scholarship program will be informed by email 48 hours after the meeting of the jury. When the student receives the confirmation email, he/she will have 8 days to accept or refuse the scholarship. If the student fails to respond within this timeframe, he/she will be considered as having refused the scholarship

French Language Requirements: Very few program are taught in English. They highly recommend that applicants for French degrees have attained level B1 in French as a minimum. However, no language certificate is required

After having completed the online form, the person responsible for the master’s program must add the following documents:

  • The application completed by the candidate and signed by the person responsible for the master’s program and the person responsible for the establishment’s International Relations Division
  • The student’s complete resume
  • The motivation letter
  • The list of courses taken in the last two years
  • The grades of the last two years and the current year
  • The student’s rating (if possible)
  • Photocopy of the student’s passport

The Scholarship is merit-based and thus the RSM MBA Awards Committee will select the candidate based on your MBA application. Criteria are:

  • Any MBA candidate who has submitted his/her online MBA application to our International Full-time MBA Programme commencing in January 2017 by one of the MBA interview. Award is open to high potential candidates who are in need of financial aid to enable them to pursue their MBA degree at RSM

Each RSM MBA Diversity scholarship will be awarded as a €10,000 tuition fee waiver. Dean’s Assistance awards are available with a value of up to 50% offered as a MBA tuition fee waiver

  • Applicants are to submit their MBA application for the international full-time MBA programme commencing in January, 2017 by one of the MBA interview round deadlines as outlined above
  • Please complete the RSM MBA Diversity Scholarship Application Agreement and email their signed applicant agreement to the RSM Financial Aid Office at finaid-at-rsm.nl no later than the relevant MBA interview application as outlined above

The Scholarship is merit-based and thus the RSM MBA Awards Committee will select the candidate based on their MBA application.  For example, essays, CV, GMAT, business case (if applicable), admissions interview. Furthermore, the Awards Committee will look at profile or aspects thereof such as nationality, cultural background, gender, experience, upbringing, sustainability etc
